Our Story

Three generations of one simple promise.

Hearthstone Family Funeral Home opened in Asheville in 1957 with one intention: treat every family the way you'd want your own family treated on the hardest day of their life.

David Whitfield, Funeral Director & Owner

A Family Business, Still

David Whitfield is the third generation of his family to run Hearthstone. His grandfather, Everett Whitfield, opened the home in 1957 after returning from Korea, believing Asheville needed a funeral home that treated families as neighbors rather than customers. David's father, James, expanded the chapel and added a dedicated space for veteran services in the 1980s. David took over in 2009 and has kept the same approach his grandfather started with: answer the phone yourself, explain everything plainly, and never rush a family toward a decision. Hearthstone remains locally owned, with every director on staff licensed and based right here in Asheville.

Our Mission & Values

We believe a family should never feel rushed, oversold, or confused about their options. Every arrangement conversation happens at your pace, with clear information about burial, cremation, and memorial choices, and honest answers about cost from the very first call.

Serving Greater Asheville

Hearthstone serves Asheville, Weaverville, Black Mountain, Arden, and the surrounding Buncombe County communities, with a chapel, viewing rooms, and a small memorial garden on-site. Pre-need consultations and in-home visits are also available for families who prefer to meet somewhere more familiar.

The People You'll Speak With

David Whitfield

Funeral Director & Owner

David grew up in the home his grandfather founded and has been a licensed funeral director for over twenty years. He believes the job is mostly about listening, and that every family deserves as much time as they need.

Renee Alcott

Family Services Coordinator

Renee is often the first voice a family hears, whether the call comes at 2 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning. She coordinates every detail of a service so the family doesn't have to track them.

Michael Sorra

Funeral Director

Michael joined Hearthstone in 2015 and holds certifications in both burial and cremation services. He works closely with families arranging veteran honors and military burial benefits.

Carol Whitfield-Nunez

Pre-Need & Aftercare Coordinator

David's cousin Carol guides families through pre-need arrangements without any pressure to decide quickly, and stays in touch with families long after a service, connecting them with grief support resources.
